Netflix ‘Bird Box’ Challenge Warning Violates Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs)

A warning from Netflix against the dangerous social media challenge inspired by its recent thriller Bird Box, starring Sandra Bullock, deemed illegal.

Pilots have been doing the ‘Bird Box’ challenge for decades since it’s required training under the code of federal regulations 61 C.F.R. § 57 (6) (ii) (b) which states pilots must “Use a view-limiting-device while practicing performance maneuvers, performance airspeeds, navigation, slow flight, and stalls.”

Notice that ground operations are excluded from the regulations since it’s only safe to fly airplanes while blindfolded, not drive them on the ground. An entire cottage industry has sprung up around selling arguably fashionable blindfolds to aviators.
