FAA Restarts ADS-B Rebate Program and Considers Early Rebates for ADS-C & ADS-D

Starting January 1, 2020, you must be equipped with ADS-B Out to fly in most controlled airspace. Starting January 1, 2021 you must also be equipped with ADS-C (ADS-Communication) for continued airworthiness.

The FAA has restarted the ADS-B Rebate Program! The program will end promptly on 10/11/2019, so act soon!

Federal Regulations 14 CFR 91.225 and 14 CFR 91.227 contain the details; however, the new ADS-C requirements have not yet been released due to the government shutdown. The deadline for ADS-D (ADS-Digitalization) compliance is set for January 1, 2022. When the government reopens expect to see rebate details for ADS-C and ADS-D. As of today’s date we don’t have information on ADS-E (ADS-Electronicalization) compliance going into effect on January 1, 2023.

According to Raymond Castro of the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA); “The Trump tax cut has been very good for our industry. There are larger budgets for R&D, Increased domestic manufacturing, and well funded lobbying efforts resulting in mandatory regulations requiring pilots to constantly upgrade their avionics if they want to keep flying”.

“ADS-B was only the first phase of a never ending cycle of upgrading to remain compliant. Now that we have pilots accustomed to paying for mandated avionics upgrades we can keep the cycle going. It’s no different than upgrading cell phones every year or two, people just line up and pay to play”, Castro said.
